Sri Sri praises Modi, asks people to vote for stable govt

CHANDRAPUR: In what could be viewed as another endorsement for BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi, spiritual leader and founder of The Art of Living, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Wednesday praised the Gujarat chief minister for his performance in the state. He did not comment on Congress scion Rahul Gandhi but termed the Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as inexperienced to lead the country. They even asked people to elect an experienced party which could give a stable government.

"I do not know Rahul Gandhi, I have never met him. But I have met Narendra Modi and he has done good work in Gujarat," Ravi Shankar said while interacting with reporters on sidelines of his visit to Chandrapur for Divya Satsang programme organized at Chanda Club ground.

He lamented that criminal elements are dominating politics and asked parties to scrutinize candidates before giving them election tickets. He also urged people to elect fair and non-corrupt candidates to help form a stable government.

Ravi Shankar ruled out AAP as a good option to run the country. Replying to a query regarding whom he preferred between BJP and AAP, he said, "Both are good, but the new party (AAP) lacks experience to lead the country. AAP should concentrate on governing Delhi for some time as they are new in the field (politics). People should prefer more experienced party to lead the country." He termed AAP as a motorist with a learning licence, who cannot be asked to drive over a mountain track.

Yoga is the best way to enforce prohibition, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says

PUDUCHERRY: Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Tuesday termed people who do not practise yoga as ayogiyan (a term in Sanskrit and Tamil which means unethical person). "If you don't practise yoga, you are good for nothing. This has been the belief since ancient times," he said while speaking at the valedictory function of the 20th international yoga festival organized by the tourism department.

He was of the opinion that yoga would be the best way to enforce prohibition. "As violence is connected to alcoholism and substance abuse, we can eradicate the evils if we focus on promoting yoga. It will make our health and society better," he said.

Pointing out that most of the problems in the modern world were mainly due to lack of communication, he said yoga inculcated among people the skills to communicate. "Yoga brings the knowledge, passion and action together," he said.

He listed out types of yoga as bhakthi, karma and gnana and elaborated that love for the universe is bhakthi yoga, action based on love for universe is karma yoga and knowing what action is needed and how to reach out is gnana yoga. He said seer and poet Sri Aurobindo had practised integral yoga.

Sri Sri said there were 18 scriptures in Tamil Nadu and regretted that none of their scriptures were popularized. "If we teach those scriptures to our students they will get the much-needed spiritual strength," he said.

He advocated inclusion of yoga in school and college curriculums. Similarly, yoga and meditation must find space in the legal system. "Yoga and meditation are used in courts in some countries to resolve issues," he said.

Earlier, while speaking to a section of reporters, he sought Indian citizenship of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees staying at the camps in the country.

He said his organization had proposed to launch a movement to popularize works of Mahakavi Bharathiyar. "We will kick start the movement at Coimbatore on January 31," he said.

He appealed to people to spend at least one hour a day for water conservation. He said Aam Aadmi Party, which formed the government at the national capital, would need at least six months to one year to fulfill its poll promises.

He appealed to all voters to exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha elections. read more at.

You & Ownership

MAN has a tendency to own things. When he owns something small his mind stays small, his life gets stifled and his whole consciousness is immersed in his house, car, spouse, children and such. A recluse leaves his home and goes far away. There also he starts owning his asana, rosary, books, concepts and his knowledge.
Owning has simply shifted from objects and people to ideas and practices. But a wise one knows that he owns the sun, the moon, the stars, the air, all of space and the Divine in its entirety. When you own something big then your consciousness also expands, and when you own something small then small negative emotions start coming up, such as anger and greed.

I wonder why people do not feel connected to the sun? The very existence of life depends upon the sun. Perhaps it is lack of awareness that causes people to refuse to acknowledge and own their connectedness to the macro-cosmic universe. The rishis in ancient India, the Native Americans and the aboriginals from all over the globe have insisted that you can feel connected to the sun, the moon and the directions.
When you own something magnanimous your consciousness also becomes magnanimous.

Indian American Youth Develop App to Help Unregistered Voters in India

A group of Indian American youth in the United States have developed a smart phone application to help the unregistered voters in India register their names in the electoral rolls.

The android app "Vote for a Better India" was unveiled last month at an event "Big Ideas for a Better India," organized by the Overseas Volunteer for Better India, which among others was addressed by spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of the Art of Living.
The android app will be used to power Voteathon, an inter college voter registration competition that is expected to have over 10,000 participating colleges with the goal of registering over 30 million voters, the event organizers said.

In his address Sri Sri Ravi Shankar emphasized increasing the voting percentage during elections. Referring to the high voter turnout in the recently held assembly elections, he called for increasing the turnout to 95 percent.

The OVBI, in a statement, called upon non-resident Indians to register themselves to vote and travel to India for a fortnight to contribute to the voter education drive. It also urged them to encourage their family and friends to vote for a better India.
